The Year I Started To Look After Myself More | Health & Beauty

Ok, so I don't really know how to start off this post. It's kinda an idea I thought of whilst in the shower ( does anyone else think loads in the shower?).
So basically last year I feel like I made small yet bigger than I thought changes to my life. Looking back now I'm thanking myself for making those decisions because I could have been in a worse position than I am now.

TEETH
Ok, so I'm starting with probably one of the most important things I decided to fight head on last year. You see, I built up such a fear of dentists. Growing up I always got bad news after bad news whenever I visited the dentist. I had braces for longer than most people and right before I got my braces off I was told randomly I needed a jaw operation or my teeth will move out of place. Out of desperation to get my braces off I refused the surgery and carried on day to day life. I then was told I may need root canal surgery by my dentist, being completely shocked and fearful after hearing horror stories of root canals I avoided the dentist for 5 years!!! I also wasn't the best at my brushing routine. Of course I brushed twice a day but working shift work meant I treated it as a chore and didn't brush for the 2 mins you're meant to, and I hardly ever flossed... (Is that too much info?) Flash forward to the beginning of 2016, I was in complete agony with my tooth and decided enough is enough I'm going to the dentist. He told me I not only had to have one root canal - but two!! Since then I have gone to the hygenist twice, had one root canal, many fillings and check ups in one year. I have to say I'm proud of myself facing my fear. I'm now obsessed with my teeth cleaning routine, I bought an expensive tooth brush and floss every day - yes I know most of you defo don't floss every day. One of the major things causing my bad teeth was my sugar intake. I was told off by my dentist to cut down on the sugar.. which leads me to my next point..

DIET
Now if you have me on Instagram, you may have seen my "weight loss" pictures. I lost a stone last year. The only thing I really changed was the diet. I have never been a healthy eater - more of a fussy eater. I didn't care about having at least 1 fruit/veg a day let a lone 5! I began educating myself on healthier meals and snacks by watching "what I eat in a day" Youtube videos, reading meal prep blog posts and meal ideas from friends. I did it gradually, and noticed how much better I felt avoiding fast food restaurants, cutting down on my high sugar intake and instead making my own food. I kind of ate less at well because the food I was eating was actually filling me up,  (I had always been slim but I had noticed my body was showing how bad I was eating). A year on and it's now a habit for me to want at least one veg with every meal and I treat fast food as a TREAT rather than a normal thing to eat.  I noticed how drained and tired I was when I ate really bad. I want to continue eating even better!

HAIR
Now really I have explained everything in my blog post HERE regarding my hair. But basically over using heat on my hair for years and dying it with strong hair dye really damaged my hair so I decided to make a change. My hair is now looking and feeling much healthier, and I'm hoping to keep it up to achieve the long healthy hair I want.

SKIN
So basically I have always been a face wipe to take makeup off kind of girl - don't worry there's many of us out there. I have always tried different skin care, but most of the time became lazy when I was too tired after work so used a face wipe. In the last year or so I have been using products better suited to my skin (I have dry skin) and doing my best to use face masks every now and then. I don't think it's made a massive difference to my skin, but I would say it's a little bit less dry. I think I've continued and improved my skin routine I'll thank myself for it when I'm old and get wrinkles haha! (they say you should start anti aging young)!

So what now?

So reading this you might be a person that does all of these anyways, but for me I am now a little obsessed with looking after all these things. My next "mission" is to get my other root canal sorted out and any other problems and save for Invisalign. I also want to work on my MIND and BODY.  I do suffer with anxiety (which has been discussed on the blog) and I want to work more on my social anxiety. There's things I'm still avoiding and I want to work on self positivism and things I'm insecure about. I've been wanting to start a workout routine again for ages but I can never seem to keep to it because of shift work - OK maybe I can work around the shifts but my bed becomes my best friend when I finish 11:30pm at night or wake up at 2:30am for my shifts.

What I'm trying to say in this blog post that small things can make a massive difference. Is there something you want to take care of? Do you look after all of these things? Discuss in the comments :)

  3. I love this post, I've started making small changes here and there (especially with diet) and I'm noticing a huge difference in how I feel within myself. With regards to skincare too, I thought my face was just really horrible and dry and there was nothing I could do about it but after tweaking what I use on my face it has all changed :)

  6. These sound like such great changes to make! I have a bit of an obsession with my teeth so always carry floss and they feel 10x cleaner when you use an electric toothbrush!

  7. Congrats on getting over your fear of going to the dentist, and just in time too by the sound of it! Good job on stepping away from the face wipes by the way, I did that a couple of years ago and started taking better care of my skin and it's amazing how much better your skin improves in the space of a few months!!

  10. You've done so well! It's true, the small changes can really make a big impact! And your reminding me I really need to go to the dentist, haha! I haven't been for too long. I was never scared as a kid, even when I got braces, but I had a horrible wisdom tooth removal that's terrified me and I refuse to go back, as the parting words were "and when you come back we can get the other ones out". NOPE! haha! It's good to hear you've overcome your fear.

Hope you are having a great week and had a nice Easter.

  19. I can certainly identify many similarities with you - I too have a bit of fear of the dentist and I've been avoiding going for the last year. It's something I definitely need to tackle as I know there are issues which need sorting!

Same with the weight thing too, I recently lost a stone with slimming world but I want to lose another half before my holiday in June, this time it's going to be harder I can feel it!
